How to Measure for an Outdoor Roller Shade
Share
To measure for an outdoor roller shade, record the clear width available for the complete shade assembly, the area you want the fabric to cover, the required vertical drop, and the clearance around the mounting area. The fabric is narrower than the complete shade assembly, so fabric width alone is not enough to plan the installation.
Before you measure
- Use a rigid tape measure and record every dimension in inches.
- Decide whether the shade will mount to a wall, beam, or another suitable surface.
- Check both sides for posts, trim, lights, doors, windows, and other obstructions.
- Measure the opening at the top, middle, and bottom if the structure may not be square.
- Photograph the full opening and both mounting ends for reference.
The four measurements to record
1. Available overall width
Measure the clear horizontal space available for the complete shade assembly, including its operating hardware. Take this measurement at the intended mounting height.
2. Desired coverage width
Measure the area you want the shade fabric to cover. This may differ from the complete assembly width. Allow for the fact that the fabric does not extend across every part of the operating mechanism.
3. Required drop
Measure vertically from the planned mounting point to the desired lower edge. Check the full lowering path for furniture, railings, handles, plants, and other obstructions.
4. Mounting and operating clearance
Confirm there is usable space at both mounting ends and around the roller, control, and bottom rail. Doors and windows should still open normally when the shade is raised or lowered.
If the opening is not square
Measure the width at several heights. Do not assume that posts or beams are parallel. Record every reading and use the smallest clear width as the limiting space when discussing product fit. If the difference is significant, contact support before choosing a size.
Common measuring mistakes
- Measuring only the desired fabric coverage and forgetting the complete assembly.
- Recording one width measurement in an opening that is not square.
- Measuring from the ground instead of the planned mounting point.
- Forgetting nearby lights, trim, handles, doors, or furniture.
- Rounding the opening measurement to a nominal product size before checking the product's actual dimensions.

| Detail | What to record |
|---|---|
| Installation location | Patio, porch, pergola, gazebo, or another area |
| Mounting surface | Wall, beam, or other surface |
| Available overall width | Top, middle, and bottom measurements |
| Desired coverage width | Area you want the fabric to cover |

Frequently asked questions
Should I measure the opening or the shade fabric?
Record both the clear space available for the complete assembly and the coverage you want from the fabric. The assembly and fabric widths are not the same.
What if the width changes from top to bottom?
Record the top, middle, and bottom widths. Use the smallest clear measurement as the limiting space when discussing fit.
Can I choose a shade from the nominal size alone?
No. Compare your measurements with the exact dimensions and mounting-clearance requirements on the product page before purchasing.
What should I do next?
Compare your measurements with the actual dimensions shown on the product page. For measuring help, email support@cozyerliving.com and include the measurements and photos listed above. You can also explore the Outdoor Roller Shades collection or join Early Access for future availability updates.
